Rope Bondage - A Safety Guide

by Dr Kink

Movement suggests freedom and the ultimate response to fight or flight instinct in humans. Voluntarily giving up this freedom via bondage or in common parlance tying up is a greatly stimulating experience that can be incorporated into both sexual and asexual play. The B in BDSM stands for bondage, and aptly leads in the emotional and experience quotient. Often this bondage is divided in to two broad categories; restraints that are pre manufactured or made and rope play. In this essay we will focus on the rope play aspects of bondage play.

What you need: A good sub, trust and some skill in tying and untying the ropes, ropes of the clad variety( steel or other metal ropes clad in cotton or) silk or woven rope, hemp cotton to silk, safety scissors, balm and ice.

What you don’t need: Synthetic or plastic rope, rubber ropes or pipes
How to plan: First of all, make sure the sub is comfortable in whatever position you want to restrain him/her. Ensure that the planned position is one that can be endured for about 10-15 mins at least. No unnatural bending or stretching. Plan your rope restraints ahead, know what patterns you want to use and what knots you want to use. Try the knots on a pillow or bolter before you use them on your sub. Most importantly know how to untie and quickly. Also learn how to cut at points that will free the sub completely. After tying up you should be able to pass your palm under the rope without difficulty. If you feel that you cant then you have tied too tightly. Avoid tying over joints, knees, elbows etc, you can tie before and after them with equal effect. Never ever use rope around the neck. Tying up breasts and testicles should also be done with care.

Watch out for: Discolored skin, pallor, numbness or shortness of breath. The sub should be able to wiggle fingers or toes on command. One thing that can go wrong is that dehydration can occur without external symptoms. Have plenty of fluids on hand. Be ready to cut the rope with scissors when needed, never use a knife.

A Tip: Rope play is both an emotional and sensual delight. Extend this by making it aesthetic too. Look at tying up in patterns, symmetries etc.
